RAVENNA: MAGIC OF MOSAIC

Ravenna has kept intact its fascinating historical and artistic patrimony and conserved all its splendour – indeed, its magnificent basilicas with their luminous, unspoilt mosaics have withstood the test of time for over one thousand five hundred years. On entering the Church of St. Vitale we can still see the presbytery and apse filled with their gleaming, evocative mosaics, hunded down to us by the Hellenic-Roman and Byzantine schools. Not far away, in Galla Placidia Mausolum we are entranced by the prolific mosaic work on the upper part of this temple and enchanted by the finely coordinated and elegantly harmonized colours. This same elegance and harmony of colour is witnessed in the mosaic of St. Apollinare Nuovo, the Arian Baptistery, the Neonian Baptistery, the Archbishop’s Chapel ad St. Apollinare in Classe. These monuments and Mausoleum of Theodoric have been added to the Unesco World Heritage List.
 

RAVENNA: DEMONSTRATIONS AND ENTRERTAINMENT

Beyond the wealth of its works of art, the suggestion of its landscapes and its beaches, Ravenna in the first place proposes a series of activities like Ravenna Festival, the international review of lyrics and symphonic music, than it is carried out in the most prestigious places, like the Church of St. Vitale and the Basilica of St. Apollinare in Classe from mid June to the end of July. Summer in Ravenna proposes other appointments: "Bella di sera" (eautiful in the evening), that from June to August proposes beyond fifty shows in the historical centre; the Festival of music organ, in August, in St. Vitale Church and “Mosaic by night” with open monuments every Friday in June, July and August with possibility of free guided visits.
 

RAVENNA OF EVINRONS – EXCURSIONS

The Ravenna hinterland proposes numerous and interesting centres where history, culture and atmosphere are interlaced.
- Russi with the archaeological area of the Roman villa, takeover of augustea age;
- Bagnacavallo that has a very preserved medieval historical centre. In the Clock tower, Stefano Pelloni the “Passatore” was imprisoned;
- Lugo where a fortress and the “Pavaglione”, four-portico used for summery shows can be admired;
- Faenza famous city for the ceramics seat of the International Museum of Ceramics.
On Ravenna’s hills you can visit
- Brisighella famous for medieval feast at the beginning of July and for the “Brisighello” the valuable oil obtained from the olives of surrounding hills;
- Riolo Terme;
- Casola Valsenio with its garden of aromatic herbs.
